The latest release from Sidney-based Australian singer-songwriter Abbey Lane is Afterthoughts, an EP that provides a satisfying dose of indie pop-rock.
Inspired by the artist’s own experiences, Afterthoughts offers different perspectives on relationships and, in particular, the things that didn’t get to be expressed. I like how one song flows into another beautifully, augmenting the artist’s well-knit narrative.
Starting the mini-album off is the candid “My Mistake (Again)”, a catchy song admitting one’s fallibility when it comes to making relationship decisions.
The theme of making mistakes continues on “Shot In The Dark”. This song is upbeat and exuberant though, its dreamy guitars making it extra captivating.
“Cantillations” starts off chill but raptures with emotion in the chorus. Abbey expresses the melancholy that accompanies the decision to go against your feelings and move on from someone. With “Darling”, she created a tender, acoustic-driven and outright passionate ode to love.
“Stuck In That Moment”, which delicately balances acoustic and electronic elements, is vaguely nostalgic, and has an earworm of chorus. Here, Lane puts on her rose-tinted glasses and focuses only on the beautiful moments.
The final track, “State of Mind”, hits all the right notes; it’s vibey indie-rock anthem that’s guaranteed to stick in your head for a while.
Abbey Lane’s vulnerability on Afterthoughts refreshing, highlighting her elevated songwriting. Her Australian fans will get to watch her perform these songs this July and August (find the tour dates in this IG post).
Afterthoughts was released via 3 Wise Monkeys.
