A fusion of country, folk and rock, Brock Davis’ music is heartfelt and steeped in storytelling. The California-based Canadian tends to delve into life’s mysteries and the pursuit of meaning. “I don’t claim to know what’s out there, but I’m fascinated by songs about a greater purpose in life, like love and art, that try to answer the essential question of why we are here,” he notes.
On his 13-track new album, Everyday Miracle, Brock takes us on a journey punctuated by obstacles. Still, a ray of hope shines throughout. Armed with his warm, powerful voice, the musician shares insights obtained from his experiences.
The second track “Keep On” (see the performance video above) carries a message of resilience amidst challenges. Its refrain, ‘keep on’, is a mantra that we can all embrace. We get a similar vibe on “Ready For A Good Time”, an upbeat song reminding us to enjoy life’s beautiful moments.
“Rain Falling On The Water” is a particularly significant song, being the emotional heart of the album. Filled with fingerstyle guitars and amazing vocal harmonies from the backing choir, the song is soulful and uplifting.
With “It Takes Just One”, Davis highlights the issue of sexual harassment in the workplace. The song is delivered with so much fervour and invites the listener for a singalong. It comes dressed in a captivating country-rock instrumentation.
Storytelling forms part of the singer-songwriter’s creative arsenal, and “Warrior” sees him make use of this fully. This folksy, inspiring song delves into the story of a salesman of who found his passion for photography after being laid off.
Going through Everyday Miracle, you find that it’s such personal body of work. Love and romance are particularly explored on “Angela (Please Say Yes)” and “My Promise To You”, the album’s last two tracks. While “Angela (Please Say Yes)” is written in form of a wedding proposal, “My Promise To You” finds Brock saying his wedding vows. We are, thus, given a heartwarming ending to the album.
The musicians shares, “My wife loves grand romantic gestures, so I knew I wanted to ask her to marry me with a song. But I barely made it past the first line before I started crying, and then that set her off crying as well. She did say yes, though.”
Everyday Miracle continues on the themes of his previous album, A Song Waiting To Be Sung. Brock Davis is slowly establishing himself as a brilliant songwriter whose songs are inspiring.
