Ever since he made his entry into the music industry a few years ago, Wesley Black has gone about his business with unbridled boldness. From his unapologetic lyrics to his genre-blurring sound, the Australian artist keeps it edgy.
Black’s new EP, Everything Will Crash and Burn, is not just him spelling doom though. In under 8 minutes, he delves into ego and self-confidence. “These three tracks tell a story of ego and aggression rising, only to discover that eventually there’s only so much you can do in a short life. After it’s all said and done and everything crashes and burns, your legacy is all that is left,” Wesley explains.
For the musician, this project embodies his love of live. Of course, the music style represents that attitude. His sound blends pop, punk and rock with hip hop. On this EP, Black goes extra hard with the energy.
EP opener “Ready To Go” is catchy and full of attitude. It is an energetic punk track imbued with Wesley’s pop sensibilities. This anthemic tune sets the tone for the mini-project; the singer-songwriter stresses the need to embrace one’s own reality no matter the circumstances.
With its chanted chorus, the second track “Ur Not My Mom” is bold and peppy. It incorporates a strong backbeat whose rhythm the artist raps to. The song finds an assertive Wesley embracing chaos while confronting his desires.
Closing the EP is “I Guess That’s Me”, a song on which he explores the boundaries of self-transformation. Heavy on distorted guitars and raw vocals, this track shows the depth of the artist’s lyricism.
Everything Will Crash and Burn balances raw emotions with thoughtful introspection. The Perth-based artist notes, “I feel that it’s been a long time since I’ve stepped away from my vulnerable side to produce music that accentuates my love of life, and these three tracks are exactly that. This EP is a project for the moment, as in the end – everything will crash and burn if I don’t take control of it.“
