Coster Ojwang achieves new levels of songcraft on new album
Not many artists of today’s generation are able to capture the essence of Luo folk music like Coster Ojwang. Powered by an impressive vocal range, his singing style involves alluring traditional melodies which bring to mind those captivating presentations during secondary school music festivals. But on his new album ISNM (Imposter Syndrome No More), the quick-rising afro-fusion artist displays not just marvellous vocals, but also top-class songwriting.
And, while the title of the album has less to do with the various themes explored, and more to do with Coster’s need to fast-track his creative process (imposter syndrome makes one doubt their own abilities), this collection of songs is brilliantly cohesive. We meet Ojwang the spiritual man, Ojwang the lover, Ojwang the socially conscious, and Ojwang the fun-lover. All co-existing in perfect harmony.
Culture is of paramount importance on ISNM. Even when he gets spiritual, like on the solemn album opener “Jowi”, Coster keeps things indigenous. But that doesn’t mean that this album can only be enjoyed by those who are deeply rooted in Luo culture. ISNM is a masterclass on how to properly fuse traditional folk music with modern sounds and topics.
Delving deeper into the music, you will notice the impeccable diversity in the styles explored, with influences ranging from afro-pop to rhumba. Ian Owiti and Gordon Odhiambo being the producers for (almost) the entirety of this album ensures its sonic homogeneity. I love how one track flows smoothly onto the next, be it a serenade or an uplifting anthem.
Imposter Syndrome No More is full of personality and Ojwang got to express himself with effortless charisma. “Live My Life”, “I Know”, “Jathum” (with Savara) help reveal the persona behind the artist. With “Okong’o”, he delivers a thoughtful commentary on alcohol addiction. “Traveller” is another introspective piece: a reminder of life’s fleeting nature.
For most of the album, we are treated to rhythmic midtempo tracks packed with layers of melodies. You’ll get to dance, sing along, or even reflect.
The choice of featured artists is almost inspired, each guest augmenting the vibe of the given song. Coster is part of the Nairobi collective KODONGKLAN, whose members collaborate with each other frequently (KODONGKLAN have a new album out as well).
ISNM (Imposter Syndrome No More) is worth the 70 minutes you will spend listening to to it. Stream it via Spotify and follow Coster Ojwang on Instagram.
