Dolla Kabarry was a popular benga musicians in the early 2000’s but proceeded into a hiatus. However, his music has still been playing on vernacular radio.
Now rejuvenated, he’s decided to make a comeback. And he is evidently much more experienced, as he’s now become one of the first Luo musicians to have a website (website no longer online).
If you do not know him already, you can read his biography below, courtesy of his website.
Born in Siaya County in October 1982, Kevin Omondi Migot—famously known as Dola Kabarry—has become a cornerstone of the Kenyan benga music scene. His career began in 1996 within his father’s band, Bondo Super Stars, but he soon sought broader experience with the Victoria International Band. Following his father’s passing in 1998, a brief return to the family band was cut short by internal conflicts, leading Dola to refine his craft under legendary maestros like Okatch Biggy and Ouma Jerry.
His breakthrough came with the hit single “Baby Atoti,” recorded during his tenure with the Heka Heka Band. However, his rising popularity caused friction with band leaders, eventually pushing him to establish his own group, Orchestra Super Haki Haki Stars, in 2001. This move sparked a prolific era of hits such as “Sella” and “Pamela Atoti,” earning him “Singer of the Year” honors in 2003 and a Kisima Music Award in 2006.
Dola’s influence extends beyond local borders:
- International Reach: In 2008, he completed an extensive tour across the U.S. and Europe, notably performing “Change the World” in honor of then-presidential candidate Barack Obama.
- Political Resonance: His track “Suda Mpya” (New Sudan) famously predated the Sudanese Peace Accord; the song so moved the late John Garang De Mabior that a meeting was scheduled between the two, though it was tragically cancelled due to Garang’s untimely death.
In his personal and professional life, Dola is supported by his wife, Consolata Janet Kabarry, who serves as the CEO of their joint venture, CONSKOM LIMITED. Today, he remains one of Kenya’s most active live performers, maintaining a rigorous weekly schedule for his dedicated fanbase.
