The upcoming sophomore EP by US pop singer Cate Tomlinson is called The Side Effects of You. With the mini-album scheduled to drop on December 6th, its final single, “The Ring of Fire”, is already here.

The track’s ominous drum beats, fiery vocals and haunting melodies all combine to bring it into the dark-pop realm. I’d also say the production complements Tomlinson’s lyrics perfectly.

“I wrote this song about a girl who is seduced by the devil in the shape of a boy,” the artist reveals. “He tricks her into sacrificing herself by promising they can be together forever in the afterlife. The story is about temptation, manipulation, and being loyal to something that is intoxicating in the moment but ultimately fatal.“

I have followed Cate since she released her debut single, “notes app apology”, in 2022. She is, in deed, talented. However, what helps her stand out more is her honest, vulnerable songwriting, which is one again showcased on this new track.
