One thing about the Nairobi live music scene that contributes to its overall appeal is the diversity in the type of music showcased. Different show formats exist for different audiences, from animated club performances to mellow, cabaret-style sets.

Although bands do not have a prominent presence in Kenyan mainstream, there’s always a chance to see them live somewhere. And there’s everything for everyone, whether you are into rhumba and vernacular music, or prefer alternative styles.

Sarabi

Since 2005, Sarabi have been captivating fans with every record or live performance delivered. Lead by the charismatic Ambasa Mandela, the band’s music is not only electrifying but also steeped in socio-political consciousness and activism. Even introspective songs like “Msalimie” feel invigorating and passionate.

Gravitti

Gravitti Band

Kenyans love reggae music. I guess that is what informed this group of young musicians to form Gravitti in 2014. The band does original pieces as well as covers, taking inspiration from classic tunes. Gravitti perform regularly in Nairobi.

Kidum and The Boda Boda Band

Over the years, Burundian-born artist Kidum has been able to build a really solid fanbase, thanks to his amazing music. He has more than a handful of hits, and was even named the “Best Male Artist of East Africa” at the 2012 Kora Awards. Kidum and his Boda Boda band remain a staple in the Nairobi live music circuit.

Nairobi Horns Project (NHP)

Nairobi Horns Project (a.k.a. NHP) is a 5-piece outfit bringing together seasoned instrumentalists, with Mokua Rabai (saxophonist), Victor Kinama (trombone) and MacKinlay Mutsembi being at the forefront. They perform and record original pieces like “Rhumba Nostalgia”, a horn-filled, certified crowd-mover. They make use of their music and platform to engage and inspire young people.

Gogosimo

Fronted by lead vocalist and producer Marcus James Jozee, Gogosimo band is completed by David Omamu (guitar) and Michael Onyango (bass and percussion). Their music blends coastal styles with western influences. Gogosimo has been in existence for over a decade.

Shamsi Music

Shamsi Music Band

The Beathogs

Jazz-funk specialists The Beathogs have built an unshakeable reputation around their memorable live performances. Their music is fun and super invigorating. The 9-member band has performed in numerous festivals such as Diani Beach Festival and Oktoberfest.

Papi OdeQ & Tamasha Beats Band

Tamasha Beats started as an all-male acapela band before incorporating other instruments. Led by singer-songwriter Papi OdeQ, the outfit performs both original compositions and covers, with benga-fusion being their main style.

Wanavokali

Wanavokali is a 6-member vocal band compromising Chep, Lena, Mella, Riki, Sam, and Ythera. The group has released two albums so far: their 2021 self-titled debut and the latest, Vibes & Vokals, which dropped late 2024. Wanavokali can be said to have found mainstream success.

Cheif & The Marshalls

For more than half a decade, Cheif & The Marshalls have been delivering amazing performances for fans of roots reggae. Although their original compositions are still in demo format, seeing those songs performed live is always an electrifying experience. The outfits comprises 5 talented musicians, namely: Cheif Muriuki (vocals/ guitar), Asule Musalia (bass), Ouma Bryant (drums), Gugo Brian (percussion) and Rasanga Olita (saxophone).
