The road towards self-betterment often involves setbacks. And while staying positive and strong-willed are necessary if one is to stay on course, sometimes it helps to simply acknowledge that there will be moments when negativity inevitably creeps in. But as long as we retain some of the fire that got us moving in the first place, all will be well. On his debut album Positive Vibes & Anger Issues (released late last year), Philadelphia rapper ND!FFRENT tackles all this.
The deluxe is out now. This extended version saw the artist add ten more tracks to the original eleven—Positive Vibes & Anger Issues Deluxe is 55 minutes of emotionally resonant songs.
The album sequencing is quite thoughtful, with the song “Positive Vibes” perfectly setting the album’s tone. On this particular track, ND!FFRENT can be heard reiterating his positive outlook on life. Still, as the album proceeds, we find ourselves taken through a roller-coaster of emotions that is typical of the human experience.
By the time we get to the second half of the album, the songs get much more hard-hitting. If the title gave you the impression that this album is a completely solemn affair, songs like “Trouble,” “Leave Me Lone,” and “Make It Make Sense” will, at once, challenge that notion. I mean they are quite vibrant, boisterous even.
“Playing Games” is another amazing piece worth talking about. Together with “True Love”, they’re romance-themed. But, while ND!FFRENT cuts a resentful figure on “Playing Games”, he revels in the beautiful feeling on “True Love”, with featured singer Jhaeyai equally baring out his soul.
“Free” and “O.T.O.T.W” close the LP on a totally uplifting note. Altogether, listening to this album is a truly emotional experience. I’m also impressed by the diverse production choices–a host of producers were enlisted for this project.
