Kenya has always had a strong DJ culture. Long before streaming, it was DJs who shaped what people listened to — in matatus, clubs, events or on radio. That role remains important. In fact, in some situations, the DJ is more in demand than the artist.

This list focuses on DJs who are ubiquitous right now: we ranked them based on the quality and number of their shows, the reach of their mixes, their fame and overall impact on culture. It is about who is genuinely making noise in 2026.

1. DJ Joe Mfalme

The benchmark against which other Kenyan DJs are measured. Joseph Mwenda — known professionally as DJ Joe Mfalme, or simply Mr. Sherehe — has been the country’s most consistently booked DJ for over a decade. A Capital FM mainstay, he commands the highest fees on the circuit and has headlined some of the biggest events in Kenyan entertainment history, from Koroga Festival to Coke Studio Africa. He is as comfortable playing a corporate brunch as he is headlining a 10,000-person concert. Versatility at that level is rare.

Known for: Capital FM shows, Koroga Festival, Guinness Made of Black, African Giants DJ of the Year award

2. DJ Kalonje

If Joe Mfalme is the king of the corporate and event circuit, Kalonje is the king of the streets. George Waweru’s Hood Locked series — now past episode 39 — has been a fixture in Nairobi matatus, clubs, and campus parties since he pioneered the format in the late 2000s. He was among the first to understand that the matatu was a distribution channel, not just a vehicle, and built a massive following off that insight. Chaguo La Teeniez Best DJ in Kenya 2011. Still consistently dropping mixes that land.

Known for: Hood Locked series, matatu and street mixes, reggae and urban Kenyan sets

3. DJ Grauchi

The digital-era breakout story of the Kenyan DJ scene. Zak Utu — DJ Grauchi — burst into the mainstream during the Covid era with his Wake Up Call online mix series, which has since run to over 195 episodes and become one of the most consistent mix franchises in the country. Each episode spans Kenyan rhumba, afrobeats, dancehall, and soca, and the series has earned him a loyal following across platforms. His live gig profile has grown to match: he performed at the Magical Kenya Open 2025 at Muthaiga Golf Club, among other high-profile bookings.

Known for: The Wake Up Call series (195+ episodes), Muthaiga Golf Club, cross-genre mixing

4. Pierra Makena

Kenya’s most prominent female DJ, and one of the most recognisable entertainers in the country full stop. Born in Meru, Pierra Makena built her DJ career alongside a television and acting profile that includes roles in Tahidi High and award wins at the Nollywood and African Film Critics Awards. She now commands over 900,000 Instagram followers and performs everywhere from club gigs in Kitengela to international events. She founded the Park and Chill event concept in Meru, and her reach extends well beyond the booth.

Known for: Park and Chill, Tahidi High actress, 900k+ Instagram, one of Kenya’s highest-paid DJs

5. DJ Kaytrixx

Charles Karanja has been a pillar of the Kenyan DJ scene since the late 2000s, when his mixes began dominating matatus and clubs in a way few others could match. He co-hosts KTN’s Str8UP Live, one of the longest-running live music TV shows in Kenya, and runs Spincycle Entertainment — a DJ agency and production company that has grown into one of the busiest in the market. Chaguo La Teeniez Best DJ 2012. Still very much active, and still a first-call name for corporate events.

Known for: Str8UP Live on KTN, Spincycle Entertainment, matatu mixes, Chaguo La Teeniez Best DJ 2012

6. DJ Creme de la Creme

George Njuguna started his DJ career in 2003 while still a university student, supplying his Chronic mixes to Nairobi matatus for free — a move that built him a following before anyone had a name for that strategy. Two decades later he remains one of Kenya’s most recognisable DJ names, with nominations for Best DJ in Africa (2018) and a club and events career that has taken him to several international stages. He is also the founder of EskoBar & Lounge and Esko Life Clothing, making him as much an entrepreneur as he is a DJ.

Known for: The Chronic matatu mixes, EskoBar & Lounge, Best DJ in Africa nomination 2018

7. DJ Kym NickDee

A strong radio and digital presence keeps DJ Kym NickDee among the most-followed Kenyan DJs online. His Freestyle In 48’s Audio Lab sessions showcase technical mixing ability that goes beyond crowd-pleasing, and his afrobeats sets have developed a particularly devoted following. He is one of the younger names on this list with the national profile to match the veterans above him.

Known for: Kiss TV presence, Freestyle In 48’s Audio Lab sets, afrobeats mixing

8. DJ Mo

The undisputed leader of gospel DJing in Kenya. DJ Mo — husband of gospel artist Size 8 — became a household name through his long-running slot on NTV’s Crossover 101, the most-watched gospel show in the country. He is also the founder of System Unit, a DJ academy that has trained a generation of gospel DJs. His influence runs deep in a market — the gospel entertainment circuit — that is larger and more commercially active than most people outside it realise.

Known for: Crossover 101 on NTV, System Unit DJ academy, gospel entertainment circuit

9. DJ Bash

One of the most active live-event DJs in Nairobi, DJ Bash has built a reputation for high-energy sets that translate equally well in intimate club settings and at major events. His NRG Radio presence gives him consistent national reach, and he is among the first names promoters call for flagship nights at top venues. Reliable, entertaining, and consistently in demand.

Known for: NRG Radio, Nairobi club circuit, high-profile event bookings

10. DJ Shinski

A major force in the digital mix space. DJ Shinski’s Naija Overdose afrobeats series and Kenyan party mixes circulate widely online and have found significant traction in the matatu circuit — making him one of the most-heard DJs in the country even if his live gig profile is quieter than some others on this list. His consistency of output and quality of mixing has built him a genuinely large digital following that continues to grow.

Known for: Naija Overdose series, Kenyan party mixes, strong digital/matatu presence

11. DJ Kace

Progressive sounds and experimental mixes have made DJ Kace a favourite among promoters of high-end corporate and exclusive events. He brings a global touch to his sets that sets him apart from DJs who play primarily to local tastes, and his reputation for reliability and quality has made him one of the most consistently booked names in that segment of the market.

Known for: Exclusive and corporate events, progressive and experimental mixes

12. Cris Darling

Christone Odhiambo — DJ Kris Darlin — is Kenya’s foremost reggae and dancehall DJ, and the founder of the Dohty Family collective which has become the main organising force behind reggae music promotion in the country. As a radio and TV host, he has brought the genre to audiences who might not have sought it out themselves. A genre specialist of real depth, with a following that is fiercely loyal.

Known for: Dohty Family collective, dancehall and reggae ambassador, radio/TV hosting

13. Simple Simon

A pioneer of Kenyan reggae sound system culture who has been doing this long enough to have influenced most of the reggae DJs who came after him. Simple Simon founded Black Supremacy Sounds, which has grown from a DJ unit into a fully fledged entertainment company with a presence on five continents. His place in Kenyan music history is secure, and his continued activity keeps him relevant in a scene he helped build.

Known for: Black Supremacy Sounds (5 continents), pioneering Kenyan reggae sound system culture

14. DJ Protege

Consistently active across Nairobi’s club and campus circuit, DJ Protege has built a loyal following among afrobeats and urban music fans. His gig diary is full, his mix output is regular, and his name carries weight among the demographic that drives the live music economy in Nairobi. One of the most dependable working DJs on the circuit today.

Known for: Nairobi club and campus circuit, afrobeats and urban sets

15. Demakufu

A growing presence in both the club and digital mix spaces, Demakufu has been building steadily in the afrobeats and urban music lane. His mixes have found traction in the matatu circuit, and his live bookings have been increasing as his profile grows. He earns his spot at 15 on the strength of trajectory as much as current standing — one to watch closely.

Known for: Afrobeats and urban mixes, matatu circuit presence, growing club bookings

Notable mentions: DJ Lyta, DJ Moh, Tophaz, Redbone, Hypnotiq, DJ Niddo, Coco Em, DJ Mellow, DJ Mo (not the gospel DJ), and DJ Tabz.
