Even those listeners who don’t understand Italian will find Camera Di Pressione quite engrossing. Camera Di Pressione is the collaborative new album that paired Italian emcee Ari Selva with Swiss producer Vaynex.
The 8-song collection blends storytelling with atmospheric boom-bap production. It finds Vaynex the more settled of the two musicians. Even when he crafts ominous beats, he keeps the groove steady.
On the other hand, Ari seems engulfed in a feeling of urgency, thoughts spilling out almost torrentially. That urgency gives the album its tone and personality.
The title translates to ‘pressure chamber’, implicitly alluding to the energy that permeates the album. There’s a feeling of restlessness, which can be attributed to the tension in the environment built by Ari.
Instead of an overly elaborate narrative though, Camera di Pressione relies on vivid imagery, each line a detailed picture. At times, the artist applies dark humor to paint that picture. Every song balances abstract ideas with surreal experiences. This is not an album for casual listening.
Through it all, the connection Ari Selva has with hip hop is maintained. He articulates this on the album. But it’s also on display for those who understand and appreciate the art of rhyming.
Also impressive is Vaynex’s production. The music ranges from textured melodies on songs like “Piromani” to head-nodding boombap beats on the likes of “Lo Scarafaggio”. On “Enclave”, DJs Crazyfish and M-Skills work the turntables, turning the track into a scratch-fest of sorts.
Ari and Vaynex really did represent the essence of hip hop with this album. Camera Di Pressione is what you get when an artist and a producer prioritize raw, artistic expression over polished craftmanship. Like I’ve already said, this is not an album for casual listening. It is a collection of songs you digest line-by-line.
