Ungus Ungus Ungus set out to entrance listener’s into their sonic world with their new album, The Fun House — by the way, I find ‘The Fun House‘ to be a befitting title for an album that takes listeners on a true sonic adventure.

Here, song structure isn’t strictly followed. Composition is less formulaic, something that appears to be the band’s modus operandi.

About Ungus Ungus Ungus, they are an Australian circus party band known to blend live instrumentation with electronic elements. Their music is lively and genre-blending, as encapsulated by The Fun House.

The Fun House opens with the aptly-titled fun anthem, “Funlerable”. This song sets the mood perfectly, providing cue for the album to proceed with bold unpredictability.

With “Poltergeist”, we find an experimental indie pop/dance track with a grippingly theatrical, sometimes goofy, edge to it. “Dr Quiet” dials things back a bit. The track blends jazz rhythms with textured electronic production. One moment it’s suspenseful, the next mildly upbeat. The hazy vocals and sax lines vocals give the song its vibrant yet lulling feel.

I crown “Wishes Three” as the album’s most sonically adventurous song. Characterized by a melodic bassline and complex jazz rhythms, “Wishes Three” feels abundantly lush.

By the time you’re hearing “Secret Track”, which serves as the first track on the B-side (on the vinyl version of the album), you’re fully engrossed by the album. You’re no-longer trying to figure out what’s coming next. You’re letting the music carry you.

The album closer, “Beginnings”, is an ambient, meditative track that unravels layers of melodies. It’s a calm song that reminds that, despite life’s moments of chaos and unpredictability, it’s possible to find bliss. And The Fun House provides just that.
