Three stylish men posing together, with one wearing a furry coat and a hat, another in a beanie and glasses, and the last dressed in colorful attire. They are surrounded by a smoky background, creating a dramatic effect.

With Karma Dojo, Swiss funk specialists The Next Movement have created an album that’s all about the groove. And, for some of us who have kept up with the trio over the past couple of years, this 11-song project is exactly what we were looking forward to. And then some.

For an album with a title as intriguing as ‘Karma Dojo‘, it follows a rather loose narrative (or perhaps I was distracted by all the dancing I was doing while listening). Still, after listening to the whole collection, you get to discover that these songs are actually linked.

The opening track, “Love”, is essentially a passionate song that finds The Next Movement expressing their love for music. Following it is “Dang! (So Fine!)”, a sexy, sensual jam perfect for late-night playlists.

Then “Call Me” pushes the tempo higher. I mean, it’s amazing how this song balances seductive lyrics with engaging rhythms. An absolute dancefloor-filler, this one.

That same energy is maintained on “Tear The Roof Off”, a funky record infused with smooth electronic elements.

However, in between “Call Me” and “Tear The Roof Off” sits the album’s first interlude, which is characterized by a lush soulful arrangement. Together with the second and third, these interludes break up the album without actually effecting a dramatic change in pace or vibe.

“Mojo” is positioned at the album’s midpoint (in terms of track-list). The brass-laden jazz-funk track is infectiously hooky. It’s a joyful celebration of resilience and renewal.

The only song that tops “Call Me” tempo-wise is “More Cowbell”. This tune sounds so energetic. And fresh too.

“Time“, the album’s penultimate track, is so alluring. The fun, bassline-driven song gives off a vibe reminiscent of classic Bruno Mars. Perfectly closing Karma Dojo is “Love It or Leave It Alone” and its amazing groove.

Listening to this collection is truly immersive. The album encapsulates The Next Movement’s sound: raw, intimate yet accessible.
