Jon and Nikki Stipp are not only life partners but also a promising rock music duo going by the name Hooked Like Helen. They are currently on a run of amazing singles, the latest being “Promise Me You’ll Run”.
Accompanied by an equally gripping music video, this intense and energetic song dives deep into the mind of Aileen Wuornos, who is one of America’s most ill-famed female serial killers. “Promise Me You’ll Run” captures the rage and pain that defined her life.
“I’m a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, so Aileen and I have that in common,” Nikki Stipp reveals. “I was fortunate enough to have a better support system, access to help, and a solid foundation for my mental health, but there’s a part of me that feels comforted by turning into a temporary monster when we play this song. Aileen was insane, yes, but she was also fearless. When I channel her through the music, all the shame and pain that was once internalized, is suddenly flipped inside out, and the trauma is handed off to the dead guys in the verses. There’s massive power in rage. We just need to control it – like those fires they burn in the forest on purpose – so that no one else has to get hurt. Music is my controlled burn.”
Hooked Like Helen are readying a new EP that drops in a couple of days, with “Promise Me You’ll Run” serving as the fourth and final single. Follow Hooked Like Helen on Instagram so that you never miss the moment the EP drops.
