Going through an emotional experience can feel so shattering. It’s only weeks, months or even years later that we truly begin to appreciate how less significant in the grand scheme of things the event or feeling was.

Grace Harris and Samuel Syrah, the artists behind Australian alternative rock duo STAHR, made this the subject of their debut EP, BLIP. With this 5-song project, they managed to turn personal experiences into visceral anthems.

Reflecting on the EP’s themes, STAHR noted that “some moments in life may seem insignificant in hindsight, but when you are living through them they rarely feel minor.

Diving into EP, you may find it interesting how Grace and Sammy traded off lead vocal duties throughout. And, while each song finds one singer taking the spotlight, the narrative around the project remains cohesive.

BLIP captures instances of emotional swings, ego spikes and self-reflection, with the lyrics being steeped with honesty.

Musically, many influences went into the production. For example, the opening track “Mother Aura” is uptempo, poppy and extra grungy. The song describes a wild night out.

With “Loving Friend“, a single preceding the EP, STAHR crafted a fervent anthem blending pulsing beats with an alt-rock texture. “Isn’t It Fun?”, the midtempo third track, is equally as anthemic.

Sammy’s tender melodies on “Be The Light” make the song the most emotionally stimulating. “Yours Tonight” does close the EP on a blissful note, with the grungy rock guitars providing the energy. It’s a pleasantly upbeat tune.

BLIP, is admittedly a great debut project from a duo going against conventional formulas when it comes to making music. The attention that STAHR has been getting is indeed fully deserved. Follow STAHR on Facebook.
